From the locker room to the waiting room

“What if the way we treat a Premier League striker's recovery could shape the future of your local clinic. What if sport wasn’t just entertainment - but the bridge connecting health innovation to the communities they influence?”
These questions are at the heart of The Performance Health Economy Podcast - where elite performance, healthcare, innovation, and leadership collide to shape the next decade of wellness, diagnostics, digital & physical care.
Why This Podcast Exists
After leading digital health and AI transformation projects across global healthcare for almost two decades, Simon went back to where he started his career and began studying how elite sport operates.
"Athletes are monitored, coached, and optimised daily - yet patients still wait for something to break."
The same systems that keep world-class players in peak condition - continuous data, recovery science, precision nutrition, performance psychology, rapid access to care, and multidisciplinary coordination - could redefine how we think about health and wellbeing.
From Reactive Care to Proactive Performance
At the heart of this transformation is the Performance Health Matrix, a simple model mapping this critical journey:
This podcast explores the crucial top-right quadrant - showing how people and organisations shift from simply treating illness to actively transforming health and performance.

My Story
Sport -especially football, has always been at the centre of my life. I wasn’t destined to be a professional, but I trained and competed as if I was. That passion led me to study Sport Science, driven by a fascination with how people improve, adapt, and perform at their best.
After university, I began an MSc in Sports Nutrition and interned with a Prem League Men’s Rugby 1st team. Alongside that, I delivered wellness workshops for government agencies across the UK - and it was during that time I realised I wanted to have a broader impact.
I launched a digital publication connecting health and wellbeing experts with business leaders, which led me to Bupa, where I developed workplace wellbeing programmes for FTSE 100 companies. Over the next 15 years, I led healthcare organisations through digital transformation - creating new products, services, and revenue models that connected clinical insight with technology and business innovation.
A spinal injury later in life brought me back to sport - this time as a patient. Traditional healthcare hadn’t helped, but a specialist Sports & Exercise Medicine centre did. And it made me question why the multidisciplinary, person-centred and data-driven approach of elite sport wasn’t more widely applied to everyday health.
While elite sport and healthcare operate under very different structures and pressure - different incentives, funding models, and levels of discipline - the opportunity for cross-pollination is huge. Just as Formula 1 innovation elevates the performance of road cars, the science, systems, and most importantly the people behind high-performance sport can reshape how we approach health, wellbeing, and performance in business and in life.
That’s why I’m building a bridge between those worlds - translating the lessons of elite sport to healthcare leaders and organisations ready to perform at a higher level.
